Somewhere in the southern Rockies near Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, the valley opened up into a sea of green just as the weather rolled in. Heavy clouds hung low over the peaks, but the last light of the day broke through and turned the sky into molten gold. For a few minutes everything felt unreal: bright wildflower meadows, jagged ridgelines and a storm building overhead like it had weight.
